Our Church History
BridgePoint Church is an exciting Nazarene Church in the Brandon, Mississippi area. BridgePoint came into being with the fusion of Turning Point Church and NewDay Community Church. A pastoral team began to pray for God's leading in our congregations with a vision to reach new people with the Gospel. We bridged together to be able to bridge hope to our community through Christ. Our church is very diverse in backgrounds, age, race, and life experiences. We are thankful for our past and excited about our future!
Our Denominational History (Brief Version)
The Church of the Nazarene was founded in 1908 by the merging of smaller congregations that had come out of the Methodist Campmeeting revivals. Our founder Phineas F. Bresee was a Spirit-filled preacher that loved to preach holiness of heart and life as well as reach out to the poor. In the early years, the Nazarene Church met in storefronts, but would later become more established and spread from coast to coast and around the world. Today, there are over 18,000 Nazarene congregations world-wide. We are one of the largest missionary sending churches and are continually looking for church planting opportunities as well as making disciples into the Global Church of Jesus Christ.
Our Church Structure
In church structure, we are congregationally based and denominationally-leadership based. In the MidSouth District (Mississippi and Tennesse combined) alone there are over 200 churches. We value education and our regional school is Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN. We have church boards and committees at all levels locally to globally.
Our Church Doctrine (Brief Version)
The Church of the Nazarene holds very similar doctrines as our Methodist brothers and sisters, The Salvation Army, Congregational Methodist Church, and Church of God (Anderson). Here are a few key doctrines:
1.We are a Christian People
As members of the Church Universal, we join with all true believers in proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ and in embracing the historic Trinitarian creedal statements of Christian faith. We value our Wesleyan-Holiness heritage and believe it to be a way of understanding the faith that is true to Scripture, reason, tradition and experience.
2.We are a Holiness People
God, who is holy, calls us to a life of holiness. We believe that the Holy Spirit seeks to do in us a second work of grace, called by various terms including "entire sanctification" and "baptism with the Holy Spirit" - cleansing us from all sin; renewing us in the image of God; empowering us to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength, and our neighbors as ourselves; and producing in us the character of Christ. Holiness in the life of believers is most clearly understood as Christlikeness.
3.We are a Missional People
We are a "sent people," responding to the call of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to go into all the world, witnessing to the Lordship of Christ and participating with God in the building of the Church and the extension of His kingdom (2 Corinthians 6:1). Our mission (a) begins in worship, (b) ministers to the world in evangelism and compassion, (c) encourages believers toward Christian maturity through discipleship, and (d) prepares women and men for Christian service through Christian higher education.
